we mount the icy stair

moonlight

darkest in its depths

lightens our cautious step

 

frost tonight –
the man at the dairy queen
lets out a yawn 

 cold wind
and blowing snow --
a blank space on the map

it's white breath,

the cat between the windrows --

dusky sparrows

moon on the frost --
the meekest creatures
huddle after dark
 

 out of bread
I toss words at the water --
